After hearing about Aetna and UHC leaving the exchanges because they were losing money I broke into a full laugh. Think about what they are really saying ” taking care of patients by rules is not profitable.” I have watched folks cheer thief statement. You see we were right the ACA has made healthcare more expensive. The truth is because the risk pool has been increased for these healthplans they want out because want to receive their bonuses at year end. Bonuses being garnered from all of us who will now have difficulty in obtaining insurance plans. Do not let the bid healthplans fool you all you are is a dollar sign and leaving the exchanges is proof positive.
It is two o’clock in the morning and a 24 something person decides to jump off a roof into a pool after his friends dare him. Of course he has had drink or two. Nothing wrong with that. He jumps off to find the pool only has two feet of water. He rolls into the ER with multiple injuries. Life changing injuries. He has no insurance because the government can’t tell him what to do with his money. His parents are devastated. The same parents that raged against any extra help for other people. “They should pull up themselves by their bootstraps” was there favorite motto. Medicaid is nonsense. Medicaid is for the lazy. Well its their turn now. Unfortunately, their son is going to require lifelong care they cannot afford. What is the first thing they say “We cannot afford this. The hospital and the government need to help us.” The answer from the social worker is we will care for your son but you will incur the cost. You probably will lose your house, car and all of your saving. As the social worker walks away the father say “What would insurance have cost for my son?” Empathetically, the social worker answers ” At his age maybe 100 bucks a month. I will have some benefit forms for you to fill out maybe we can get him on Medicaid. It will help differ your cost. You need to worry at all ages because life happens whether you like it or not. Pay today or pay tomorrow. Think about it.
